Why this work matters
Human survival is a research priority.
Advanced AI could bring enormous benefits. The possibility that it could also cause human extinction makes safety a fundamental research and policy problem.
Addressing that possibility requires technical understanding, careful reasoning, and institutions capable of acting on the evidence. HARPI’s purpose is to contribute to each.

Useful research makes it possible for others to understand a claim, challenge its reasoning, and improve on it.
Our research approachMake assumptions explicit
State the conditions a result depends on and where its conclusions stop.
Distinguish evidence from judgment
Show which claims rest on proof or observation, and which depend on values or uncertain forecasts.
Keep conclusions open to revision
Make room for criticism, corrections, and evidence that changes the argument.
Independent inquiry
The work should come first.
Names, affiliations, and financial pressures can influence which ideas are heard. HARPI supports anonymous authorship to reduce personal exposure and keep attention on the substance of the research.
